Filming Diary

Shoot 1

20th Jan 2020:

Our first day of filming did not go as planned. Our original plan was to get the sfx scenes done first because they required more prep time.  On the shoot day, I bought in the make up for the shoot and was ready to apply the sfx effects to the actor (Matty). The time slot was specifically perfect for the sfx scene because I was able to prep Matty in our hour lesson before the lunchtime shoot. Despite the organization we did not account on the actor not being in the lesson. As a result we were not able to shoot the scenes we wanted and we were forced to compromise and shoot low maintenance scenes. Jack took on the role of director and was responsible for making sure we could still film as well as lead us to how the scenes should be filmed.  From the first day of filming we realised that we should have had a section in our contingency plan that detailed what to do if we were unable to shoot the desired scenes.

The second day of filming I wasn't scedulded to be involded. However, the shots collected were usable. One thing to change is that we shouldn't film without a tripod as hand shots make the camera tremble and shake. One thing that we went wrong day one of filming was our shot composition and framing but on day two we were able to fix that and get decent shot compositions and framing. From the second day we have decided that we have to experiemet with the placement of people and props to ensure the opening isn't boring.

Shoot 3

23rd Jan 2020:

On our third day of filming I was scheduled to do Matty's SFX make up again. Me and Matty conferred with the rest of the group and decided on a set time before the shooting scedule to get his make up done and this ran smoothly and we did this without any faults. When coming to filming, the ideal scenes were filmed however we found it troubling filming out of sequence. For example, the shots of Matty and his wounds are the last scenes of the opening however it suited Carly and Matty to film that paricular scene on this day as they were able to find an hour before filming to do this make up. From the third day, it is clear as a group the  commication is becoming more effective and we are working better as a team to improve however shot types and variables still have to be considered as they are easily missed in the filming window.

Shoot 4

28th Jan 2020:

On the fourth day of filming, we were very slow to start as we ran into issues. Our first issue was with the syringe as the needle kept falling into it instead of staying in postion - we did have a plan in place however that failed so we inprovisied and played with postioning to cover it. The second issue is that due to the slow start to filming, we were only able to film small sections of scenes so our time wasn't fully effective as it could have been. The third issue was that we didn't bring the food colouring down to our filming spot so more time was wasted going to retireve it. Overall the shots taken were decent and filmed better then previous times but from the fourth day, it is clear that as a group we need to be more orginaised and use our time effectivly to ensure we get the best out of our shooting slots.

Shoot 5

30th Jan 2020:

The fifth day of filming (29/01/20) I wasn't scheduled to be involved however the people scheduled to film...didn’t film so that caused us to have to film the following lunchtime. On the 30th of January, me and anyone scheduled to film had to try get shots that didn’t contain Laila done as she wasn’t able to film and the majority of shots left to film did contain her.  Although this did cause chaos for the group, we did manage to capture the shots of Matty sweating - in the session of filming me and the group worked effectively and felt like the session when well despite the lack of shots capture. From the fifth day of filming, it is clear that responsibility isn’t being taken for the shooting sessions and that lack of communication has caused the majority of the issues. In the sixth session we are hoping to get all the shots are Laila done so we can get onto editing our opening.

On the sixth day of filming only four of the class showed up. The four of us who turned up had to stretch in order to ensure we got the most of the session. We had two cameras set up and Jack and Jacob filmed. Laila was the main character and I directed using there story board. In this session, we did get a variety of shots and did well in the hour we had to film. In this session, we rememebed our feedback from previous sessions and applied that to the session. This meant we used a tripod throughout the session and chnaged angles and shot types to make sure the shots weren't boring. In this session all of the equiment and props were brought to the filming set which meant it was all ready to be used. This session went well and we obtained a range of shots however not everyone set to film turned up therefore the group felt stretched to ensure we got everything done.

On the seveneth day of filming we had to film two shots. The first shot was a re-shoot of Matty sweating. As a group we decided that the shots taken of matty in shoot 5 weren't the best so we wanted to retain better ones. The second shot is Laila leaving the Lab to collect her documents. In shoot 6, we missed this shot so we decided to retain it in thi9s short shooting session. Overall, shoot session 7 went well as we knew the two spefic shots that we wanted to collect.

In most of the filming sessions at the start, we did lack in communication and preparation however after each session we did learn who was the most reilable and learnt to prepare for sessions before hand so that all props and equipment were collected. We did manage to retain the shots we pictured in the storyboard.

There wasn't suppose to be an eight shoot however after watching the second draft of our film opening we decided we wanted to add in another few shots that weren't originally on the storyboard. The shots in mind include Laila leading Matty to a seat where he will later be injected with the toxic substance and a shot showing a document confirming that Matty has consented to the test. I wasn't actually scheduled to film for this shoot however after looking at the footage it is clear that the shots we wanted were retained.
